A Poem of Remembrance

This Poem reminds me of something that you might of imagined when you where younger. For instance it says that it took place “During the summer which unicorns were still possible. ” Also It makes me think of a simpler time when summer meant a long strand of lazy days when you did not got to school. Now summers consist of going on vacations, camps, and basically everything but sitting at home exploring the woods of climbing a tree. I know that at least for me those were some of the funnest things to do (climbing tree’s). I remember I once built a tree house in a tree in my front yard which was still up until recently when it broke. Other things in the poem were almost cheesy little flash back to someones young childhood. For example skinned knee’s and mischievous acts. Even if you never did the things in this poem you are almost convinced you remember doing those kinds of things. That is what I think it means by summer that might have not ever existed. That is everything that went through my mind as and after I read this poem.

Fluorine is a key chemical in toothpaste and other dental hygiene products. However, some people are concerned about adding Fluoride to drinking water because it is untested outside of the mouth, so people do not know the effects it might have on the rest of our body. Plus Fluoride just recently became legal, and for along time it was considered a toxic waste and still today one of it’s main use’s is rat poison. Others also think that the government should not be trying to keep are teeth protected from cavities by adding Fluoride into our water. Not to mention there are plenty of other health issues but they are focusing on tooth decay for some reason.

After reading this article I changed my opinion on this subject and I do not believe that there should be that amount of Fluoride in our water because of the health risks it brings. Also I believe that there are a whole lot of health problems that the government could be focusing on instead of dental care. The side affects I am most concerned about that come along with this extra amount of fluorine are that babies can get brain damage from it, immune system alteration, musculoskeletal harm, genetic damage, thyroid dysfunction, and even cancer in some situations.

There haven’t been many technological advances in toothpaste before Fluoride. It all started when a man named McKay discovered Fluoride in drinking water and decided to add it into different compounds and testing it. Then eventually he found out that as long as it is below 1 PPM it is safe for consumption. Later Proctor and Gamble (Crest) made stannous fluoride combined with calcium pyrophosphate. After about ten years the next big breakthrough took place when P and G discovered sodium monoflurophosphate (or MFP) and began to sell it to companies like Colgate who eventually caught up with Crest and became major competition. That is how the start of Fluoride took place and how the dental industry made it become a major part of the composition of toothpaste.
